The next Tuscarora Trail work trips are scheduled for Thursday, August 15 and Saturday, August 17.

The plan is to work Thursday on the McClures Gap section of the Tuscarora if there is a 4x4 pickup truck available to drive us up the Florence Jones Reineman Wildlife Sanctuary interior road to the gap.  Otherwise we’ll try to work on the trail section over the PA turnpike.  On Saturday we’ll try to work on the section between McClures Gap and route 74.  Again, a 4x4 pickup will be needed to get us to the site.

Certified sawyers should bring chainsaws.  Also bring loppers, pruning saws, and brushcutters.  Bring lunch, water, and gloves and plan to be out in an isolated area all day.

Let me know what days you can help.  The work location will depend on a volunteer or two with a truck.  We’ll meet either at the Reineman sanctuary parking lot in from of the classrooms or in front of the PA turnpike maintenance site on Locke Road at 24455 Locke Road Shade Gap, PA, at 8:30am.

The sanctuary parking lot can be reached by driving north from Carlisle on Pennsylvania route 74 past Waggoners Gap and continuing down the other side of the Mountain.  At the bottom of the grade take the first road on your left which will be Greens Valley Road.  Drive about 0.6 miles to the sanctuary entrance on the left and proceed to the parking area.  The sign to the sanctuary may not be evident until just reaching the driveway.

The turnpike maintenance site can be reached by driving west from Fannettesburg on the Fannettsburg/Burnt Cabins Road over the mountain about 3.4 miles and turning right on Locke Road.  Drive about 2 miles on Locke Road to the entrance to the turnpike maintenance site.
