The next Tuscarora Trail work trips are scheduled for Thursday, August 15 and Saturday, August 17.

The plan is to work Thursday on the McClures Gap section of the Tuscarora if there is a 4x4 pickup truck available to drive us up the Florence Jones Reineman Wildlife Sanctuary interior road to the gap.  Otherwise we’ll try to work on the trail section over the PA turnpike.  On Saturday we’ll try to work on the section between McClures Gap and route 74.  Again, a 4x4 pickup will be needed to get us to the site.

Certified sawyers should bring chainsaws.  Also bring loppers, pruning saws, and brushcutters.  Bring lunch, water, and gloves and plan to be out in an isolated area all day.

Let me know what days you can help.  The work location will depend on a volunteer or two with a truck.  We’ll meet either at the Reineman sanctuary parking lot in from of the classrooms or in front of the PA turnpike maintenance site on Locke Road at 24455 Locke Road Shade Gap, PA, at 8:30am.

The sanctuary parking lot can be reached by driving north from Carlisle on Pennsylvania route 74 past Waggoners Gap and continuing down the other side of the Mountain.  At the bottom of the grade take the first road on your left which will be Greens Valley Road.  Drive about 0.6 miles to the sanctuary entrance on the left and proceed to the parking area.  The sign to the sanctuary may not be evident until just reaching the driveway.

The turnpike maintenance site can be reached by driving west from Fannettesburg on the Fannettsburg/Burnt Cabins Road over the mountain about 3.4 miles and turning right on Locke Road.  Drive about 2 miles on Locke Road to the entrance to the turnpike maintenance site.

The Annual Charlie Irvin Corn Roast  will be held on Saturday, August 3, at Little Cove Cabin.  The North Chapter will supply corn, hamburgers, hot dogs and the fixings.  Every thing else will be pot luck.  Prior to the corn roast some work will be done on the Tuscarora Trail instead of the AT.  The cabin will be available Friday and Saturday nights plus Sunday morning.

Blowdowns have been reported on the Tuscarora Trail section over the turnpike.  Brush cutting is also needed.  In addition blowdowns have been reported on the section between Fannettsburg Road and Cowans Gap State Park.

Useful tools are expected to be brush cutters, loppers, a chainsaw for the blowdowns.

For the trail work we'll meet at the gate to the Silberman Trail Center at 11200  Aughwick Road at 8:30am.  This is about five miles north of Cowans Gap State Park.  We'll quit work so we can be back at Little Cove Cabin for the corn roast by 2pm or earlier..

If you're only going to the corn roast show up at 2 pm or earlier for socializing.
If you'd like to help prepare food, come early.

1)  If you plan to attend the work trip, let me know as soon as possible.
Be sure to notify me if you plan to come on the work trip.
Those who respond will be notified if plans change.

2)  If you plan to come to the corn roast make sure it's clear whether you're coming only to the corn roast or also going to be on the work trip.  For the corn roast I need your response no later than Thursday, August 1, but preferably sooner, so we'll be able to plan the amount of food.

The cabin can be reached by going west from Mercersburg, PA, on route 16.  Continue through the village of Cove Gap and start up the grade on Tuscarora Mountain.  Partway up the grade turn left onto route 456.  Drive 1.4 miles on route 456 to the road into the cabin on the right which is identified by a PATC sign.  The address of the cabin is 4975 Little Cove Road.
